Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins Review

Our narrator Lux, takes us through the events of Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins. After losing her mother, she meets and falls in love with Nico, he makes her an offer of a lifetime, to go to Hawaii with him. She accepts and moves to Maui, having future plans to travel the world on Nico's boat. So when they are asked to take Brittany and Amma to a remote island in the South Pacific and receive a significant amount of money for their services, they don't think twice.

And so the four of them set sail to the Island of Meroe, where there is a history of shipwrecks and cannibalism. Once they arrive, they find two other guests already staying on the island, Jake and Eliza. So a party of four...becomes a party of six. Though completely of the grid, life is going great, these strangers become friends instantly and enjoy their time on the exotic island. Then one day a seventh visitor arrives...and some very strange things start happening...friendships fall apart, no-one knows who can be trusted.

First of all, you shouldn't go into this read expecting it to be a rollercoaster of twists and turns. This is a slow burn thriller. The author took her time to build the suspense from page one, until the end where it all happens and everything makes sense. We get glimpses of before chapters about Lux and Nico, Amma and Brittany and Eliza and Jake. Each of these chapters reveal a little extra to file away and keep you wanting to turn those pages. What I personally liked about this book, is the way the author created these characters, you will start liking a character and then suddenly you are not sure weather you can still trust him/her. And then at times you might find yourself liking one of the unlikable characters...and again trusting him/her doesn't quite feel right... The author did a really good job at keeping me guessing.

One thing I didn't enjoy about this novel, was the language, these characters were swearing a lot. Sometimes it felt like they might have limited vocabulary. As I was listening to the audiobook while reading, I felt like I needed to cover my ears...it was a bit too much.

But overall, it was a normal, slow pace thriller, nothing extraordinary, but the kind of book that is still a good read if you are willing to go into the story with an open mind. It is a quick, easy read and will definitely pass the time.

I rated this book 3 out of 5 stars!
